Most of the work that keeps patients safe happens where no one is watching. A near miss gets reviewed at 7am. A worrying trend is flagged before it becomes a pattern. And a board packet comes together the night before the meeting. Healthcare Quality Week is the one time each year the whole field pauses to say thank you.
Healthcare Quality Week runs October 18–24, 2026. Here’s what the week represents, why it matters, and a few practical ways to make it meaningful for your team.
What Is Healthcare Quality Week?
Healthcare Quality Week (HQW) is hosted by NAHQ, the National Association for Healthcare Quality. NAHQ describes it as a dedicated time to celebrate the discipline of healthcare quality and safety and to raise awareness of the positive impact these professionals have in their organizations and communities.
The week also offers education. NAHQ’s event listing shows seven domains, including Patient Safety, Health and Data Analytics, Performance and Process Improvement, and Regulatory and Accreditation. You can review the agenda and register on the NAHQ Healthcare Quality Week page, or find dates and details on the event listing.
Why Quality Teams Deserve the Recognition
The results of this work are measurable. According to The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grade data, average hospital scores for central line-associated bloodstream infections have fallen 50 percent since their fall 2022 peak.
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are down 45 percent
- MRSA down 42 percent
- C. diff down 30 percent
Progress like this takes prevention protocols, audits, and steady follow-through, the daily work of quality, risk, and patient safety professionals. Leapfrog also notes that hospitals differ widely, so the work continues. In rural and community hospitals, the load is heavier still, because one quality director often carries incident review, survey readiness, and improvement projects at the same time.
Five Ways to Recognize Your Quality Team This Week
Recognition works best when it is specific. These ideas take little time:
- Name a real win. Credit a concrete result, such as a drop in falls or a faster event review, and say who made it happen.
- Show what reporting changed. Tell frontline staff what their last reports led to. Nothing encourages reporting like seeing results.
- Give quality a voice. Invite your quality lead to present one story at the next leadership or board meeting.
- Retire one report. Take a recurring manual report that nobody acts on off the list, and hand the hours back.
- Invest in learning. Support a session during HQW, or a professional credential, for someone on the team.
Turn the Week Into Momentum
Recognition lands best when it comes with something useful. Why not use the week to look at your own data with fresh eyes: choose one measure, ask what changed and why, and decide on a next step. If your reports feel more like documentation than direction, our article on data storytelling in healthcare shows how to turn a rising trend into a documented improvement.
It is also a good week to check survey readiness. Surveys are unannounced, and the teams that fare best keep their evidence current every day rather than only before a visit.
Supporting Quality Teams All Year
At Prista, we build ActionCue CI for the people this week celebrates. It supports quality improvement in healthcare by keeping incident reporting, quality measures, and improvement projects in one platform designed for rural, community, and critical access hospitals, so trends surface while there is still time to act and the evidence surveyors ask for builds as the work happens.
Happy Healthcare Quality Week from all of us at Prista.
